My Top 10 First Dance Songs for your Wedding

OK. You have hired the venue, you’ve bought the perfect dress, and have put on an awesome spread to delight all of your guests..Hold on..There’s something missing..The first dance song…How do you choose a first dance song. Well for some the song chooses itself because it has a special meaning to the happy couple. But this is not the case for everyone…

I have been DJ’ing for over 20 years and have played host to my fair share of wedding receptions. Here is my personal top 10 first dance songs (in no particular order). There are some noteable omissions from the list. I’ll let you figure those out..Please let me know what you think of my list in the guest book. Or share this page with someone you know who is getting married soon.

I’ve also added in the lyrics to each of the songs for you too.

1. One Day Like This – Elbow

I played this at a friends wedding and everyone loved it so much I played it again towards the end of the night. This one will get all of your guests involved. It is a truly dramatic piece of modern pop music with a classic theme.

Lyrics to One Day Like This

Drinking in the morning sun

Blinking in the morning sun

Shaking off a heavy one

Yeah, heavy like a loaded gun

What made me behave that way?

Using words I never say

I can only think it must be love

Oh anyway, it’s looking like a beautiful day

Someone tell me how I feel

It’s silly wrong, but vivid right

Oh, kiss me like a final meal

Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight

‘Cause holy cow, I love your eyes

And only now I see the light

Yeah, lying with you half awake

Stumbling over what to say

Oh, anyway, it’s looking like a beautiful day

When my face is chamois creased

If you think I wink, I did

Laugh politely at repeats

Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin

‘Cause holy cow, I love your eyes

And only now I see the light

Yeah, lying with you half awake

Stumbling over what to say

Well, anyway, it’s looking like a beautiful day

So throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right for life

Throw those curtains wide

‘Cause holy cow, I love your eyes

One day like this a year would see me right

And only now I see the light

Throw those curtains wide

‘Cause holy cow, I love your eyes

One day like this a year would see me right

And only now I see the light

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

Throw those curtains wide

One day like this a year would see me right

2. All Of Me – John Legend

John Legend has got a golden voice and this is such a perfect song for a first dance. The lyrics, the voice, this song has it all.

Lyrics to All Of Me

[Verse 1:]

What would I do without your smart mouth?

Drawing me in, and you kicking me out

You’ve got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down

What’s going on in that beautiful mind

I’m on your magical mystery ride

And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright

[Pre-Chorus:]

My head’s under water

But I’m breathing fine

You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

[Chorus:]

‘Cause all of me

Loves all of you

Love your curves and all your edges

All your perfect imperfections

Give your all to me

I’ll give my all to you

You’re my end and my beginning

Even when I lose I’m winning

‘Cause I give you all of me

And you give me all of you, ohoh

[Verse 2:]

How many times do I have to tell you

Even when you’re crying you’re beautiful too

The world is beating you down, I’m around through every mood

You’re my downfall, you’re my muse

My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues

I can’t stop singing, it’s ringing, in my head for you

[Pre-Chorus:]

My head’s under water

But I’m breathing fine

You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

[Chorus:]

‘Cause all of me

Loves all of you

Love your curves and all your edges

All your perfect imperfections

Give your all to me

I’ll give my all to you

You’re my end and my beginning

Even when I lose I’m winning

‘Cause I give you all of me

And you give me all of you, ohoh

[Bridge:]

Give me all of you

Cards on the table, we’re both showing hearts

Risking it all, though it’s hard

[Chorus:]

‘Cause all of me

Loves all of you

Love your curves and all your edges

All your perfect imperfections

Give your all to me

I’ll give my all to you

You’re my end and my beginning

Even when I lose I’m winning

‘Cause I give you all of me

And you give me all of you

I give you all of me

And you give me all of you, ohoh

3. Stand By Me – Ben E King

I’ve included this in the list as it is my own personal favourite.

Lyrics to Stand By Me

When the night has come

And the land is dark

And the moon is the only light we’ll see

No I won’t be afraid

Oh, I won’t be afraid

Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darling, darling

Stand by me, oh stand by me

Oh stand, stand by me

Stand by me

If the sky that we look upon

Should tumble and fall

All the mountains should crumble to the sea

I won’t cry, I won’t cry

No, I won’t shed a tear

Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darling, darling

Stand by me, oh stand by me

Oh stand now, stand by me

Stand by me

So darling, darling

Stand by me, oh stand by me

Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me

Whenever you’re in trouble won’t you stand by me

Oh stand by me, oh won’t you stand now, stand

Stand by me

4. Wherever You Will Go – Charlene Soraia

Lyrics to Whever You Will Go

So lately, been wondering

Who will be there to take my place

When I’m gone, you’ll need love

To light the shadows on your face

If a great wave shall fall

It would fall upon us all

And between the sand and stone

Could you make it on your own?

[Chorus:]

If I could, then I would

I’ll go wherever you will go

Way up high or down low

I’ll go wherever you will go

And maybe I’ll work out

A way to make it back some day

Towards you, to guide you

Through the darkest of your days

If a great wave shall fall

It would fall upon us all

Well I hope there’s someone out there

Who can bring me back to you

[Chorus:]

If I could, then I would

I’ll go wherever you will go

Way up high or down low

I’ll go wherever you will go

Run away with my heart

Run away with my hope

Run away with my love

I know now, just quite how

My life and love might still go on

In your heart, in your mind

I’ll stay with you for all of time

[Chorus:]

If I could, then I would

I’ll go wherever you will go

Way up high or down low

I’ll go wherever you will go

If I could make you mine

I’ll go wherever you will go

If I could turn back time

I’ll go wherever you will go

I’ll go wherever you will go

5. Grow Old With You – The Wedding Singer

I’ve added this one because it’s unconventional and appeals to my sense of humour. That and the fact that I enjoyed the movie.

Lyrics to Grow Old With You

I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad

Carry you around when your arthritis is bad

All I wanna do is grow old with you

I’ll get your medicine when your tummy aches

Build you a fire if the furnace breaks

Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you

I’ll miss you

Kiss you

Give you my coat when you are cold

Need you

Feed you

Even let ya hold the remote control

So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink

Put you to bed if you’ve had too much to drink

I could be the man who grows old with you

I wanna grow old with you

6. Truly Madly Deeply – Savage Garden

This is another track which really sticks out in my memory. I played it at one of the many Weddings I DJ’d for and the lyrics in this song, the melody the breaks all go to make it another all time classic first dance song so it has to go in my top 10 list.

Lyrics to Truly, Madly, Deeply

I’ll be your dream

I’ll be your wish I’ll be your fantasy

I’ll be your hope I’ll be your love

Be everything that you need

I’ll love you more with every breath

Truly, madly, deeply do

I will be strong I will be faithful

’cause I’m counting on

A new beginning

A reason for living

A deeper meaning, yeah

[chorus:]

I want to stand with you on

a mountain

I want to bathe with you in the sea

I want to lay like this forever

Until the sky falls down on me

And when the stars are shining

brightly in the velvet sky,

I’ll make a wish send it to heaven

Then make you want to cry

The tears of joy for all the

pleasure and the certainty

That we’re surrounded by the

comfort and protection of

The highest powers

In lonely hours

The tears devour you

[chorus]

Oh can you see it baby?

You don’t have to close your eyes

‘Cause it’s standing right

before you

All that you need will surely come

I’ll be your dream I’ll be your wish

I’ll be your fantasy

I’ll be your hope I’ll be your love

Be everything that you need

I’ll love you more with every breath

Truly, madly, deeply do

[chorus]

I want to stand with you on a

mountain

I want to bathe with you in the sea

I want to live like this forever

Until the sky falls down on me

7. Greatest Day – Take That

I picked this one because it’s just such an uplifting song and the lyrics work really well to make this an excellent choice for your first dance.

Lyrics to Greatest Day

Today this could be, the greatest day of our lives

Before it all ends, before we run out of time

Stay close to me,

Stay close to me

Watch the world come alive tonight

Stay close to me.

Tonight this could be the greatest night of our lives

Let’s make a new start,

The future is ours to find

Can you see it, can you see it in my eyes

Can you feel it now, can you hold it in your arms tonight

Hold on

Hold on,

Hold on

Hold on (Tonight)

Hold on

Hold on

Oh stay close to me (Hold On)

Stay close to me

Watch the world come alive tonight

Stay closes me

Ooooooh

Hold your head high, (Hold On)

Arms open wide

Yea the world starts to come alive when you stay close it me

Today this could be the greatest day of our lives

Today this could be the greatest day of our lives

Oooooh

And the world comes alive

And the world comes alive

And the would comes alive

Oh oh oooooh

Stay close to me (and the world comes alive) hold on

Stay close to me (and the world comes alive)

Watch the world come alive tonight

Stay close to me (Hold on)

Oh stay close to me and the world comes alive

Stay close to me and the world comes alive

Watch the world come alive tonight

(stay close to me) oh oh ohoooo

8. It Had To Be You – Harry Connick, Jr

A timeless classic taken from the film ‘When Harry Met Sally’. The list wouldn’t be complete without a little Big Band action and this song fits the bill perfectly.

Lyrics to It Had To Be You

It had to be you

It had to be you

I wandered around

And finally found

Somebody who

Could make me be true

Could make me be blue

Or even be glad

Just to be sad

Thinking of you

Some others I’ve seen

Might never mean

Might never be cross

Or try to be boss

But they wouldn’t do

For nobody else gave me a thrill

With all your faults I love you still

It had to be you, wonderful you

It had to be you

9. Michael Buble – Feeling Good

A powerful ballad from the man with the golden voice. The Michael Buble version is, in my opinion, the best choice for a wedding first dance. It’s another classic for the moment with plenty of drama to go round..

Lyrics to Feeling Good

Birds flying high

You know how I feel

Sun in the sky

You know how I feel

Breeze driftin’ on by

You know how I feel

It’s a new dawn

It’s a new day

It’s a new life

For me

And I’m feeling good

I’m feeling good

Fish in the sea

You know how I feel

River running free

You know how I feel

Blossom on a tree

You know how I feel

It’s a new dawn

It’s a new day

It’s a new life

For me

And I’m feeling good

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don’t you know

Butterflies all havin’ fun you know what I mean

Sleep in peace when day is done

That’s what I mean

And this old world is a new world

And a bold world

For me

For me

Stars when you shine

You know how I feel

Scent of the pine

You know how I feel

Oh freedom is mine

And I know how I feel

It’s a new dawn

It’s a new day

It’s a new life

It’s a new dawn

It’s a new day

It’s a new life

It’s a new dawn

It’s a new day

It’s a new life

It’s a new life

For me

And I’m feeling good

I’m feeling good

I feel so good

I feel so good

10. Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol

This song by Snow Patrol is another modern classic love song and is another great choice for your first dance as husband and wife.

Lyrics to Chasing Cars

We’ll do it all

Everything

On our own

We don’t need

Anything

Or anyone

If I lay here

If I just lay here

Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

I don’t quite know

How to say

How I feel

Those three words

Are said too much

They’re not enough

If I lay here

If I just lay here

Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told

Before we get too old

Show me a garden that’s bursting into life

Let’s waste time

Chasing cars

Around our heads

I need your grace

To remind me

To find my own

If I lay here

If I just lay here

Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told

Before we get too old

Show me a garden that’s bursting into life

All that I am

All that I ever was

Is here in your perfect eyes, they’re all I can see

I don’t know where

Confused about how as well

Just know that these things will never change for us at all

If I lay here

If I just lay here

Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

So there it is, my top ten list. I hope this gives you some inspiration for your wedding.

Here is my top 10 countdown of all time Best Christmas Songs to get you in to the festive spirit!

10. Wizzard – I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday

This one always conjured up thoughts of what it really would be like if it was Christmas everyday. I think the novelty would have probably worn off by day 3. Plus imagine how expensive it would be. No one going to work. It wouldn’t be good for the economy. Any way it just wouldn’t be Christmas without hearing this at least half a dozen times and twice on the day itself.

9. Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade

Originally released in December 1973, the song had around half a million back orders. It then went on to sell over 1 million copies and was still in the UK Singles Chart in February!

Slade reportedly earn over £500k in royalties from this song every year which is enough to keep Noddy Holder attuned to the life he is accustomed to. Many other artists have tried and failed but this one has stood the test of time. A Christmas Classic.

8. Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song

Nat King Cole conjures up an idyllic picture of Christmas in this hit which was first released in 1946. This is a heart warming song all about the magic of Christmas. Nat King Coles’ silky smooth delivery is like a velvet blanket able warm even the coldest of December nights. Enjoy!

7. Eartha Kitt – Santa Baby

The sexiest Christmas song ever written. Eartha Kitt purrs more than sings the immortal line ‘been anawful good girl’ with an eyebrow raised. Countless other female artists have tried to match Eartha’s X appeal – the Pussycat Dolls, Madonna, Taylor Swift and even Missy Piggy – but none have come close This is the song that puts the X in X-mas.

6. Wham! – Last Christmas

Three chart facts: “Last Christmas” is the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach number one.
In Japan it has sold over 600,000 copies making it the best-selling single that did not reach that country’s top-10 chart.

This was a charity record with its proceeds going to famine relief in Ethiopia. Apart from “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” which prevented this from reaching #1, it is the biggest selling Christmas song in the UK. (George Michael features on both songs).

5. Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You

With global sales of over 14 million copies, the song remains Carey’s biggest hit globally and one of the best-selling singles of all time!

In terms of airplay (at least in America), this is by far the most successful Christmas song written after 1963, when Bing Crosby recorded “Do You Hear What I Hear?.” The most popular holiday songs on American radio were all written between 1934-1963, with “Sleigh Ride” (1948), usually the most-played.

4. Band Aid 1984 – Do They Know It’s Christmas

A song that’s sure to stir up emotion. Bob Geldof seems to divide opinion but no one can take take away the true sentiment and sincerity which shine through in this Christmas Classic. The orginal and still by far the best version in my opinion. The song has raised around £9m to good causes in Africa in the UK alone.

Fact: The single raised $14 million for famine relief in Africa. Geldof is Irish, so he cannot be knighted, but he did receive a KBE, which is equivalent and is popularly known as Sir or Saint Bob.

3. The Pretenders – 2000 Miles

Originally released back in 1983 this song reminds me of all the friends and family who are far away at Christmas.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SkWIqQ3oLY?wmode=opaque]

2. Judy Garland – Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

For me Judy Garland was a class act and a very rare talent indeed. This song captures Judy Garland at her best. Many have tried but for me no one comes close to Miss Garland’s version of the song.

Fact: The song was first published in 1943 with lyrics by Ralph Blane and music by Hugh Martin. The song brought comfort to many American soldiers who were fighting overseas during World War II.

1. The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale Of New York

This is more than a Christmas song, this was written straight from the heart and is why it is my number one Christmas Song of all time. Here are a couple of facts about the song. Did you know Shane MacGowan was born on Christmas Day?

Fact: This song is about Irish people who emigrated to America in the 19th century to escape the potato famine and in hope of making it as entertainers in New York. Many didn’t, however, and ended up homeless. It is also said to come from a desire to move away from tacky Christmas songs and to highlight the fact that a lot of people have a terrible time at Christmas.
